Botox 101: What to Expect Your First Time
New to Botox or Dysport? Here's everything you need to know — from how treatments work to what to expect before and after your first appointment.
If you've been curious about Botox but haven't tried it yet, you're in good company. Most people who eventually do spend months — sometimes years — thinking about it first.
I understand the hesitation. There's a lot to wonder about before a first appointment: whether you'll still look like yourself, whether it hurts, what it costs, and whether you'll end up with the frozen look you've seen on TV. So here's a simple, honest breakdown of what Botox is, how it works, and what you can expect if you decide to try it.
What exactly is Botox?
Botox is a purified neurotoxin (botulinum toxin type A) that's been used safely in medicine for decades. It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for certain facial lines — forehead lines, the frown lines between your brows, and the crow's feet around your eyes.
By softening those muscles, your skin looks smoother and more rested, without changing how you naturally express yourself.
Botox is just one brand name
"Botox" has become a household word, but it's actually just one of several brands of botulinum toxin used cosmetically.
I also offer Dysport, another FDA-approved neurotoxin that works similarly but can have a slightly different onset time and diffusion pattern. During your visit, I'll talk you through which makes the most sense for your goals — Botox, Dysport, or a combination of the two.
What is treatment actually like?
- Quick and easy. Most appointments take around 15 minutes.
- Minimal downtime. You can return to your normal day right after — just skip the gym for the rest of it.
- Noticeable, but natural. You'll usually start seeing results within five to seven days, with full results around the two-week mark. They typically last three to four months.
"Will I look frozen or overdone?"
This is the biggest fear I hear from first-timers, and it's a fair one.
That overdone look usually comes from one of a few things: too much product, treatment that wasn't needed, or an injector who didn't account for facial balance and your natural features. My approach is different. I focus on subtle, thoughtful adjustments that help you look like yourself, just a little more refreshed. I'd always rather start conservative and build than overdo it and wait for it to wear off.
"Does it hurt?"
Most people are surprised by how quick and tolerable it is. The needles are very small, and while you might feel a few brief pinches, it's over before you know it.
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on which areas we treat and how many units are needed, which is why I like to start with a free 15-minute video consultation for new clients. We can talk through your goals, figure out what actually makes sense for you, and build a plan that fits your budget — no guesswork and no pressure.
How do I prepare? (Before and after care)
A few things help you get the best result.
Before your appointment:
- Avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E for 24 to 48 hours beforehand to minimize bruising.
- Come in with clean skin — no heavy makeup or skincare.
After your appointment:
- Stay upright for at least four hours.
- Avoid massaging or rubbing the treated area.
- Skip strenuous workouts for the rest of the day.
- Wait 24 hours before facials, saunas, or intense heat.
I'll walk you through all of this in person, so you'll know exactly what to expect.
"What if I decide it's not for me?"
Then nothing happens — and that's one of the reassuring things about Botox and Dysport. The effects are temporary. If you ever decide not to continue, your muscles gradually return to their normal activity. You won't end up worse off than when you started, and nothing about it is permanent or one-way.
