Botox 101: What to Expect Your First Time
New to Botox or Dysport? Here’s everything you need to know — from how treatments work to what to expect before and after your first appointment.
If you’ve been curious about Botox but haven’t taken the plunge yet, you’re not alone. Most people who eventually try it spend months — sometimes years — thinking about it first.
And we get it. You probably have questions: Will I still look like myself? Will it hurt? How much does it cost? Am I going to end up with that “frozen” look I’ve seen on TV?
Here’s a simple, honest breakdown of what Botox is, how it works, and what you can expect if you decide to try it.
What exactly is Botox?
Botox is a purified neurotoxin (botulinum toxin type A) that’s been safely used in medicine for decades. It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for creating certain facial lines — think forehead lines, frown lines between the brows, and crow’s feet around the eyes.
By softening these muscles, your skin looks smoother and more rested, without changing how you naturally express yourself.
Fun fact: Botox is just one brand name
“Botox” has become a household name, but it’s actually just one of several brands of botulinum toxin used for cosmetic treatments.
At Aesthetics Rox, we also offer Dysport, another FDA‑approved neurotoxin that works similarly but may have slightly different onset times and diffusion patterns.
During your consult, we can talk through which product makes the most sense for your goals — whether that’s Botox, Dysport, or a combination.
What is it like to get treated?
- Quick & easy: Most Botox appointments take around 15 minutes.
- Minimal downtime: You can return to normal activities right after (just skip the gym for the rest of the day).
- Noticeable, but natural: You’ll typically start seeing results within 5–7 days, with full results in about two weeks. These results usually last 3–4 months.
Will I look “frozen” or “overdone”?
This is probably the biggest fear for first‑timers — and it’s a valid one. But here’s the truth:
That overdone look you sometimes see? It usually happens when an injector uses too much product, pushes unnecessary treatment, or doesn’t consider facial balance and your natural features.
My approach is different. I focus on subtle, thoughtful enhancements that help you look like you — just a little more refreshed.
Does it hurt?
Most people are surprised by how quick and tolerable it is. The needles used for Botox are very small, and while you might feel a few quick pinches, the treatment is over before you know it.
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on the areas treated and how many units are needed. That’s why I like to start with a free 15‑minute consult (virtual or in‑person). We can talk through your goals, see what makes sense for you, and build a plan that fits your budget.
(Tip: Right now, new patients can get $65 off their first Botox treatment through the Allergan Alle rewards program.)
How do I prepare? (Before & After Care)
To get the best results, there are a few things I recommend:
Before your appointment:
- Avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, or vitamin E for 24–48 hours before treatment to minimize bruising.
- Come in with clean skin (no heavy makeup or skincare products).
After your appointment:
- Stay upright for at least 4 hours.
- Avoid massaging or rubbing the treated area.
- Skip strenuous workouts for the rest of the day.
- Wait 24 hours before facials, saunas, or intense heat exposure.
I’ll walk you through everything during your consult so you know exactly what to expect.
What happens if I decide it’s not for me?
Nothing! One of the great things about Botox (and Dysport) is that their effects are temporary. If you ever decide not to continue, your muscles gradually return to their normal activity.
